18 February 2019 marked the 163rd anniversary of the birth of S. F. Rusova.

Sofiia Fedorivna Rusova (1856 – 1940) was an outstanding Ukrainian pedagogue, public figure, writer, theoretician and practician in the field of social preschool education in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and one of the organisers of feminist movement. In 1871 she and her sister opened the first private kindergarten in Kyiv for children of the Ukrainian intelligentsia. Her works covered preschool education, history of pedagogy, and pedagogical life in Ukraine as well as abroad. She defended the right of Ukrainian people to be taught in Ukrainian. She produced the following textbooks: Ukrainskyi bukvar (Ukrinian primer), Pochatkova heohrafiia (Geography for beginners), Pochatkovyi pidruchnyk frantsuzkoi movy zadlia samonavchannia i pershykh klasiv himnasii z frantsuzko-ukrainskym slovarem (French for beginners).
