Foreign Language Documents

In the fund of the V. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Educational Library of Ukraine, there are approximately 15,000 documents in English, German, French, Polish, Italian, Czech, Bulgarian, and other languages published abroad. The collection includes the “Publications of the 17th – early 20th centuries in foreign languages,” which comprises over 2,000 rare books and periodicals dated from 1615 to 1917, some of which are considered a national cultural heritage of Ukraine (Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1709 dated December 19, 2001). The collection of book rarities includes textbooks, educational guides, and encyclopedic publications from various fields of knowledge: pedagogy, psychology, geography, chemistry, physics, mathematics, philosophy, and a wide range of literary works.

Since 1918, the collection of foreign-language documents has been universal in content and thematic scope. Over the years, it has been supplemented through gifts from international organizations, including the embassies of Austria, the British Council in Ukraine, the French Cultural Center, the Goethe-Institut, the charitable fund “Seibra-Light,” and the well-known British publisher “Macmillan.” The Polish Academy of Sciences made a significant contribution to the collection with 500 collections of scientific papers, materials from conferences, seminars, textbooks, and manuals in various educational and psychological fields abroad.

The library houses the world-renowned encyclopedias “Britannica” (1998) and “Americana” (1998), which are a hallmark of the collection.

“Britannica” is the most comprehensive and oldest universal encyclopedia in the English language. Its first edition was printed in 1752 under the title “Encyclopaedia, or a Dictionary of Arts and Sciences.” Designed by its authors to be a practical guide across various fields of activity, it contains verified scientific information and is structured alphabetically. It acquired its current name, “Britannica,” in 1771 when it consisted of only three volumes. Due to high demand among readers, it has been constantly improved, updated, and reissued. The library holds the 15th edition of this encyclopedia from 1998, comprising approximately 32,000 pages, over 65,000 articles, 24,000 photographs, maps, and illustrations.

“Americana” is a globally recognized American encyclopedia, first published in 1903/1904 and originally composed of 16 volumes. The library preserves its 30-volume edition printed in 1998. “Americana” caters to a wide range of readers, featuring articles on natural and exact sciences, technology, economics, as well as information about specific works of literature, music, and visual arts. It typically includes reference articles and reviews, particularly about individual countries and historical events (such as “18th Century” and “20th Century”). It provides detailed materials on the USA and other countries in North and South America, including biographies of American figures, characteristics of US states and cities, and institutions. The encyclopedia involved the collaboration of 6,500 individuals, resulting in 9,000 bibliographies, 150,000 cross-references, over 1,000 tables, 1,200 maps, and around 4,500 black-and-white and color photographs.

The V. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Educational Library of Ukraine has assembled a diverse range of foreign periodical publications, including rare foreign periodicals from the 19th – early 20th centuries (“Die Deutsche Schule,” “Monatsschrift für höhere Schulen,” “Pädagogische Studien,” “Teachers College Record,” “The British Journal of Psychology,” etc.), as well as periodicals from 1918 to the early 21st century printed in the USA, France, Great Britain, Germany, Poland, and other European countries (“Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis,” “Childhood Education,” “Zeitschrift für Pädagogik,” “Edukacja Ustawiczna Dorosłych,” “La Revue Française de Pédagogie,” etc.), which illuminate the history and current state of education in foreign countries.
