Mykola Ivanovych Pyrohov (1810-1881) was a national pedagogue, scientist, surgeon, anatomist, pathologist, public figure, initiator of battlefield medicine (also called field surgery) and surgical anatomy, Professor and head of the Institute of Practical Anatomy at the Petersburg Medicosurgical Academy, the siege of Sevastopol (1854 – 1855) veteran, one of the reformers of education system, founder of the university in Odessa, initiator of Sunday schools, trustee of the Odessa and Kyiv educational districts, and creator of the school reform project. In his pedagogical works he raised issues over the improvement of the process of education in schools and gymnasiums. He was also concerned about teachers’ professional training. The scientist stated the requirements regarding a unique popular school, connection between school and life, and university reform. He also produced research papers on anatomy, problems of anaesthesia, methods of surgery, and fundamentals of bone restorative surgery.
