Oleksandr Matviiovych Astriab was a prominent Ukrainian pedagogue, scientist-reformer, founder of the school on methods of teaching mathematics, Professor, author of many textbooks, educational and methodological manuals on geometry, algebra, and arithmetic, Honoured Scientist of the Ukrainian SSR (1944), and K. Ushynskyi prize-winner (1952). In 1953 he was awarded the Order of Lenin.
