08 August 2019 marked the 200th anniversary of the birth of Panteleimon Oleksandrovych Kulish (1819 – 1897), a Ukrainian writer, pedagogue-methodologist, literary critic, historian, specialist in folklore, ethnographer, interpreter, philologist, cultural worker, and teacher of the Russian literature and history of noble schools and gymnasiums. Panteleimon Kulish worked as a teacher of the Russian language at St. Petersburg University. He was a founder of his own printing house in St. Petersburg, publisher of the literary Khata (Small house) almanac and Osnova (Basis) journal, books for popular reading under the general title Silska biblioteka (Rural library). He was a reformer of the Ukrainian orthography, author of Hramatka (Grammar), Deshcho pro vykhovannia ditei (On training children), Pro Ukrainsku slovesnist (On the Ukrainian literature), Zapiski o Yuzhnoj Rusi (Notes on the Southern Rus) (2-volume set), the first Ukrainian historical novel Chorna rada (Black council), collections of stories, poetry, poems, articles, reviews, and research papers.
