Swiss educator, one of the first theorists of the labor school, professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and the University of Zurich. In the 80s of the XIX century, he put forward the idea of the labor school as a socio-political issue. He saw the task of the labor school primarily in training the skills of handicrafts and agricultural work in children. In the 20s of the twentieth century, he promoted the idea of civic education based on universal morality. The educator was one of the initiators of the development of social pedagogy.
