Mykola Oleksandrovych Korf (1834 – 1883) was a Ukrainian pedagogue, methodologist, prominent zemstvo figure in the field of popular education, organiser of zemstvo primary and popular schools in Ukraine, disciple of K. Ushynskyi’s ideas, head of the powiat (district) school board in Oleksandrivsk (Zaporizhia at present), initiator and founder of school libraries at zemstvo schools, honorary member of the Geneva Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg Teachers’ Training Society, the Moscow Literacy Committee and the Moscow University, initiator of courses for popular school teachers, organiser of college libraries, and author of the following textbooks for teachers and pupils: Zemskij vopros (O narodnom obrazovanii) (Zemstvo problem: on popular education) (1867), Rukovodstvo k obucheniyu gramote po zvukovoj metode (Guide to grammar teaching: audio method) (1867), Russkaya nachalnaya shkova (Russian primary school) (1870), Nash drug: kniga dlya chteniya (Our friend: book for reading) (1871), Malyutka: pervaya kniga dlya narodnoj shkoly (Baby: the first book for popular school) (1872), Kak obuchat gramote rebyat i vzroslyh (How to teach grammar) (1880), and Pervonachalnoe pravopisanie (Basic speller) (1882). Works by M. O. Korf are relevant at present; they are studied by many scientists, such as Bondar L. S., Hryhorenko O. P., Yehorov S. F., Mazur P. I., Mosiiashenko V. A., Rohova P. I., Rozhniatovska O. A. and others.
