Ukrainian public, political and educational figure, writer, translator, literary critic, educator.

After graduating from the Faculty of History and Philology of Kyiv University of St. Volodymyr he taught at Fundukleiv Women’s Gymnasium in Kyiv, Slutsk Men’s Gymnasium in Volyn, the Commercial School, the Froebel Institute, and at M.V. Lysenko Music and Drama School in Kyiv.

He was the founder of the Ukrainian Scientific Society (1908), organizer of the founding meeting of the Kyiv Prosvita (1906), co-publisher of the Ukrainian satirical and humorous magazines “Shershen” and “Gedz”, editor of the magazine “Syaivo” (1913–1914). He wrote articles on language and national issues, works on the creative work of I. Kotlyarevsky, T. Shevchenko, O. Storozhenko, collections of poetry “Khutorni sonety” (“Rural Sonnets”), “Stepovi motyvy” (“Steppe Motives”), prose and drama, translations of works by Ovid, O. Pushkin, F. Schiller, G.G. Byron.

In 1917 he headed the Society for Distribution of School Education in Ukraine. He was one of the organizers of the Central Council, head of the General Secretariat of Education, thanks to which the Ukrainianization of schools began, the Ukrainian People’s University, the Pedagogical Academy and the Academy of Arts were established.
