17 September 2019 marked the 145th anniversary of the birth of Volodymyr Fedorovych Durdukivskyi (1874 – 1938), a prominent Ukrainian pedagogue, specialist in literature, public figure, member of the Central Council and Government of the Ukrainian People’s Republic, one of the leaders of the Kyiv Prosvita (Enlightment) society and the All-Ukrainian Society of Teachers and Educationalists, one of the founders of the Vik Publishing House, head of the Research and Pedagogical Commission of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, member of the editorial board of the Ukrainian educational Vilna Ukrainska shkola (Free Ukrainian School) journal, author of the programme project for examining brigade labour system in labour school, head teacher of the Ukrainian T. Shevchenko Gymnasium in Kyiv. Volodymyr Durdukivskyi published his papers on pedagogy in the following Ukrainian educational journals: Svitlo (Light) (1910-1914), Vilna Ukrainska shkola (Free Ukrainian School), and Pratsi Naukovo-pedahohichnoi komisii VUAN (Papers by the Research and pedagogical commission of the AUAS).

His name was tabooed during a long period of time. After 1937 it was not mentioned in pedagogical texts even in the negative context, despite the fact that in 1965 the decree issued by Special troika concerning V. F. Durdukivskyi was countermanded, and in August 1989 the trial of the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine was closed for the lack of corpus delicti in the convicts’ acts, and the convicts were rehabilitated.
