On 16 April 2016 the pedagogical community celebrated the 175th anniversary of the birth of Khrystyna Danylivna Alchevska. The specialists of V. Sukhomlynskyi State Scientific and Educational Library of Ukraine arranged a book exhibition titled ‘Khrystyna Alchevska: a prominent figure in the field of popular education’ prepared within the framework of ‘Personal book exhibitions’. The librarians presented the information bibliographic resource covering Kh. D. Alchevska’s creative oeuvre and studies about her creative and pedagogical activity.

Khrystyna Danylivna Alchevska (1841 – 1920) was a Ukrainian pedagogue, prominent figure in the field of popular education, organiser and head teacher of Sunday schools, methodologist of primary school, founder and teacher of the Kharkiv Women’s Sunday School, member of the Kharkiv Society for Popularsing Literacy, tutoress of one-grade zemstvo school in Oleksiivka village, Katerynoslav government (Luhansk region at present), and author of the manual for teaching adults Kniga vzroslykh (Book for adults). Her Peredumannoe i perezhytoe (My thoughts and experiences) contains diaries, letters, and memories. Kh. D. Alchevska was a compiler of the index, which includes books for popular and children’s readings titled Chto chitat narodu? (What books are for popular reading?) (3-volume set).
