10 February 2019 marked the 246th anniversary of the birth of Vasyl Nazarovych Karazin (1773 – 1842), a Ukrainian and Russian scientist, erudite, inventor, educationalist, pedagogue, public figure, leader of the Principal School Board, the Ministry of Popular Education, vice-president of the Free society of the Russian literature-lovers, founder of popular school for rural children, author and co-author of projects regarding organisation of state system of educational establishments, initiator and one of founders of the Kharkiv University, its library (1805), parochial school and Engineering society, author of many food industry inventions, and author of papers on history, economics, agronomics, selection, meteorology, and chemistry.
