30 September 2016 marked the 175th anniversary of the birth of Mykhailo Petrovych Drahomanov (1841 – 1895), a Ukrainian scholar, historian, specialist in literature, publicist, specialist in folklore, philosopher, pedagogue, statesman, public figure, one of the leaders and teachers of Sunday schools, author of textbooks for these schools, Associate Professor and lecturer of history at the Kyiv University, Professor of Sofia University, one of the organisers of teachers’ training courses for teachers of the Ukrainian popular schools, active leader of the Kyiv Hromada (Community) society, founder of the Free Ukrainian Printing House in Geneva, founder of the Geneva Circle, publisher of the political Hromada (Community) journal, fighter against national and social enslavement of Ukrainian people, author of the following works on school education: Zemstvo i mestnyj element v narodnom obrazovanii (Zemstvo and local element in popular education), Pedagogicheskoe znachenie malorusskogo yazyka (Pedagogical importance of the Little Russian language), and Narodni shkoly na Ukraini (Popular schools in Ukraine).
