17 August 2014 marked the 250th anniversary of the birth of Maksym Fedorovych Berlynskyi (1764 – 1848), a Ukrainian historian, pedagogue, the first archeologist in Kyiv, teacher of the Teachers’ Training Seminary in St. Petersburg, teacher of history and geography, head teacher of the Main Popular School in Kyiv (the First Kyiv Gymnasium since 1809), teacher of the Kyiv Academy, Honoured member of the Kyiv Archeographic Commission, researcher of monastic libraries and chronicles, one of the organisers and head of the first administration in the Kyiv University, one of the organisers of the Provisional Committee for Studying Kyiv Antiquities, and author of Kratkaya Rossijskaya istoriya dlya upotrebleniya yunashestvu (Russian history in brief), Istoriya goroda Kieva ot osnovaniya ego do nastoyashchego vremeni (History of the city of Kiev starting from its foundation till 1800), and Istoricheskoe opisanie Malorosii i goroda Kieva (Historical description of the Little Russia and the city of Kiev).
