Interdisciplinarity and integration as a basis for shaping modern education
Abstract
The article highlights the theoretical and practical foundations of integration and interdisciplinarity as essential principles of contemporary educational processes. A comprehensive theoretical analysis of scientific approaches was conducted, which enabled the identification of multiple levels of integration, including ontological, methodological, and applied. The study emphasizes that integration and interdisciplinarity are not limited to the mechanical combination of knowledge; rather, they promote the development of systemic thinking, cognitive flexibility, and learners’ abilities to analyze and solve complex, real-world problems. The interdisciplinary approach is conceptualized as a synthesis of knowledge across different fields, facilitating the acquisition of universal cognitive and metacognitive skills, integrative thinking, and the capacity to transfer concepts and methods between disciplines. The article provides examples of implementing integrated educational content, including STEM programs, interdisciplinary courses, case studies, and project-based learning, all of which contribute to the formation of a holistic understanding of the studied phenomena. Key challenges in implementation are identified, such as the narrow subject specialization of teachers and the absence of a unified conceptual framework, which necessitate systemic changes in both professional teacher training and the organization of the educational process. It is concluded that integration and interdisciplinarity represent not only contemporary educational trends but also essential conditions for designing curricula that are responsive to the challenges of the 21st century. Prospective directions for further research are proposed, including the development of innovative integrated educational models, assessment of the effectiveness of interdisciplinary programs, and the exploration of the impact of digital technologies on the implementation of integrative learning strategies. The findings underscore the critical role of interdisciplinary approaches in fostering complex problem-solving skills, enhancing learners’ cognitive adaptability, and preparing students for dynamic and interconnected global contexts.
