Galician journals in the collection of V. O. Sukhomlynskyi state scientific and pedagogical library of Ukraine
Abstract
The paper highlights the historical significance of Ukrainian Pravda (1867-1880), Uchytel (1889-1914) and Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk (1898-1932) periodicals considered as organs of science and writing, Ukrainian literary and scientific press, and pedagogical society. The publications by literary critics, writers, and public figures who contributed to these periodicals are analysed. The factual information about editorial boards, places of publication, periodicity and other data is presented. The names of editors, publishers, and authors who produced the bibliographic editions were ascertained. It is analysed that pedagogical editions occupied a special place among the professional periodicals of Galicia in the second half of the 19th century. The Ukrainian school needed a periodical for discussing national schooling, pedagogical achievements, and pupils’ education. Uchytel was aimed at popular teachers as well as teachers of secondary schools and teachers’ seminaries; it was the most popular pedagogical journal of Galicia, which covered the problems of education, preservation of the best traditions of Ukrainian school and culture. It is noted that the Ukrainian national literary and scientific Pravda journal became the main publication of the second period of popular journalism. It covered chronicle, political material, and discussions on the problems of social life. It was found out that the Ukrainian literature, science and public life Literaturno-naukovyi vistnyk monthly covered almost the whole range of problems that the Ukrainian society were faced at that time. The best works by Ukrainian writers and poets and literary articles were published in the periodical. The published materials played a significant role in shaping the ideology of the Ukrainian national movement and the development of modern Ukrainian literature.
