Reading Room of V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s Collection
is a specialized room of the library functioning as a scientific laboratory
for studying the life, work and pedagogical heritage of the outstanding Ukrainian teacher-humanist

In 2002 – 2003 V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s family gave SSPL of Ukraine 3,393 items of documents, namely: outstanding teacher’s personal works published in the Ukrainian and 50 foreign languages, materials about his life and work in the Ukrainian and many foreign languages, documentary video and photographs collected after the scientist’s death. These materials constitute the basis of the Reading Room of V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s Collection opened at the library in March 2003.

At present the document collection kept in the reading room holds nearly 5,000 items. Among them are:

  • V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s works in the Ukrainian and 50 foreign languages;
  • publications devoted to the teacher and materials concerning the use of the scientist’s pedagogical heritage: scientific (monographs, collections of scientific works, materials of scientific conferences, dissertations, authors’ abstracts of dissertations), informational (indexes, programmes, booklets), educational (textbooks, educational and methodical manuals) and reference publications (encyclopaedias, guides);
  • publications (V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s articles and articles about him) issued in periodicals and their copies arranged in 50 files and kept in the reading room;
  • electronic versions of the 5-volume set of selected works by V.O. Sukhomlynskyi (1976 – 1977) and documentary films about the outstanding teacher.

The reading room contains 217 items published in foreign languages. V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s works kept in this reading room were translated and published in more than 30 foreign languages in 1960 – 2007.

    The following most popular works written by the famous teacher and which constitute a part of a treasure house of the world pedagogical thought are kept in the reading room:

Among the oldest foreign language editions kept in V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s Collection are the following books: “Vykhovannia kolektyvizmu u shkoliariv” (“Teaching Collectivism among Schoolchildren”) (published in Serbian in 1960), “Vykhovannia komunistychnoho stavlennia do pratsi” (“Teaching Communist Attitude to Work”) (published in Romanian in 1960 and German in 1961, 1963), “Duma pro Liudynu” (“Ballad about a Man”) (published in Uzbek in 1964), “Pedahohichnyi kolektyv serednioyi shkoly” (“Secondary School Teaching Staff”) (published in Japanese in 1968).

The collection contains a lot of editions about V.O. Sukhomlynskyi which are signed by the authors’ autographs and inscriptions showing their respect to the Teacher and his family.

Reading Room of V.O. Sukhomlynskyi’s Collection provides service to scientists, teachers, postgraduates and students of higher education institutions.
